School Library Services (SLS) supports Hawaii's public school librarians and teachers to prepare our students to succeed in the 21st Century.

Vision:School Library Services supports public school librarians in the State of Hawaii by providing services and resources to meet the informational and instructional technology needs associated with the education, research, and professional development.

March 2012 Non-Credit Workshops

The Office of Curriculum, Instruction and Student Support, Extended Learning Opportunities and Student Support Section, is offering technology integrated non-credit workshops that are open to all Hawaii Department of Education employees.  The workshops will beheld on Oahu during the weeks of October 4-9, 2011 and March 13-16, 2012.
 
A minimum of ten paid participants is required for each session.  If the minimum number of participantsis not two weeks prior to the date of the class, the workshop will be cancelled. Descriptions of each session can be found at PDE3 site.

 The workshops focus on integrating technology tools and/or web services with standards based education to help increase student engagement and achievement.  The charge is $25 per person, per session unless indicated with an *.  Make checks payable to: Department of Education and mail to: NC workshops; 475 22nd Ave. Room 211; Hon. Hi. 96816; Attention: Amy H.  Payments are due two weeks before the workshop.  Sessions will be held at the OCISS Annex Building 264A, 475 22nd Avenue, Honolulu, Hawaii 96816.

Each participant brings: laptop computer with iworks ‘09 (or higher) AND an ipad 1 or 2.

Introduction to Thinkfinity

Working with Smart Interactive whiteboards - Intermediate level

9:00-2:30

Learn how technology tools such as a computer with iworks 09 software and an ipad (1 or 2) enable you and students to create electronic publications. This session will enable you to create a simple epub and start you on your way to designing projects for your students to engage in.

Learn about online resources that could enhance your lessons and engage your students. In this workshop you will learn strategies to navigate through a wealth of material. Verizon Thinkfinity Content Partners produce discipline-specific, standards-based Web sites that include lessons and templates for teachers, interactive activities, games, resources, and reference materials for students.

This workshop will be focused on developing interactive Smartboard lessons using the tools, templates, and web-based resources. Participants will be given hands-on exercises to utilize the tools and develop two lessons by the end of the workshop.

                            Books and Buddies  

The successful Books and Buddies events are being made available for another year! If you are interested in hosting an event at your school please contact either Lynette Kam via Lotus notes or call 203-5510 to make arrangements. If you are interested in attending these events, please watch for notices through Lotus Notes or call to find out more information.

The Books and Buddies events are held as a means for librarians to provide professional book reviews and obtain new books for their library collections. As an added feature, librarians have the opportunities to visit other libraries and network with colleagues in the field. 

 Scheduled events all from 3:00-5:00 p.m.   Please contact the librarian to register, obtain directions, etc.

School Library Report 

The online school library report is now available at: <http://ociss.k12.hi.us/survey.> for your use. When completed, please: 1. print a copy; 2. have your principal sign it; and 3. send it to: Lynette Kam @ OCISS room 209; 475 22nd Ave. Hon., Hi 96816; or fax it in to 733-9154. 

The report is due by May 31, 2012.

New additions have been added to the survey based on feedback from librarians at the Fall District meetings. These additions have a +sign next to the number.
